You can have a great song, great talent, and an incredible voice, but from my experience without passion, perseverance, and a little divine intervention, or what some may call luck or timing, things often times don't come to fruition. This is clearly the case in the music business as well. Having been in the entertainment business from modeling, starring in a motion picture, building and owning my own rehearsal/ recording studio, to forming my own rock band managed by Bill Graham Presents out of San Francisco CA. and playing many shows and concerts over the years. I have seen the ins and outs of the entertainment industry.
If your goal is to make it in the music business, you need to have the songs that will grab the attention of the record industry and again, the passion to pursue your dream, the perseverance to not give up, and a little help from the powers that be. It all has to line up, especially in these precarious times with most of the labels either haven consolidated or just no longer in the fray. With fewer Independent labels, only three major labels still left standing, and 360 deals becoming the norm, it seems that the music industry has morphed into the wild wild west. However the beat goes on, and new artists are still getting inked, but from my perspective to have real success of getting one's music out to the world, you still have to have hit songs, along with a credible label to implement their machinery of distribution and promotion. That's if you the artists intend on making it big and not just sell songs, or albums to make chump change on a much smaller scale through one's own means including the avenues of exposure and sales on the internet. This is where the proverbial 'Major record deal' still has its place in this ever morphing music business. I can't think of one artist that is on the Billboard Charts and that is making a lucrative income from their music that is not signed with a Major record label, with the exception of a few artist that are signed to a respectable Indie label. Those of you who think you're going to make it big by selling your songs through the internet options are unfortunately just dreaming. I'll say it again, to make it large in the Music Industry, one must have a deal with a Major record label for its distribution/promotion, substantial costs, and the expertise of implementing the machinery of the label to make an artist a legitimate success in the music world. This is where my partner and I (J&D) can give the artist that we work with a viable chance to open the door for that opportunity of success. I have been a judge for the 'World Championships of Performing Arts' (W.C.P.A.) and a judge for the 'Big Talent Showcase' (B.T.S.) which was held at the Wilshire Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles two years in a row, where I was also invited by the president of the B.T.S. to give a seminar on the state of the music industry, as well as discussing song composition and other music related topics. While judging these contests, and because of my involvement in the music world, I am often asked about different aspects of the entertainment business and as a songwriter/producer what styles of music do we write and produce. This website was in part inspired by those many inquiries over the last several years.
